Creative Writing: Sniff Sniff, Sniff Sniff

Sniff sniff, sniff sniff

I step across the threshold
    Of the door
    Of my home
New smells that cover my body
    Rapidly diffuse
Filling the air
Finding two tiny nostrils
    To call a humble abode
Our little dog
    Miley
        Runs to me
She sniffs
Up and down my legs
Sniff sniff, sniff sniff
Up and down my legs
For minutes and minutes
Sniff sniff, sniff sniff
Her little whiskers and hairs
An eyelash or two
Bat against my leg
Tickling it ever so slightly
Making me giggle
Ever so slightly

As she does it
I wonder
What does she smell?

Alien animals of course
    Unknown dogs or cats
But what does she smell?

Does she smell the fear
Of a young puppy
Away from its mother
Howling in the night
    Waiting for a call back
        Miles and miles away?
Does she smell the jealousy
Of a kitten who has lost the attention
The household had placed on her
        Only days before
And the determination she has
    To win it back?
Does she smell the grief
Of a dog who has lost his friend
Silently weeping
    Crying
        Longing
            Hoping
For that familiar bark
To sound in his ear once more?

What does she smell
As she sniff, sniffs
Up and down my legs?

The other night
Miley
Sniff sniff, sniff sniffed
On my mother’s belly

My mother’s belly
Where the cancer was
Only six months ago

My mother’s belly
Which they split open
Taking away that which
Cutting away that which
Forcing out that which
Might have/could have
Killed her
Only six months ago

Only six months ago

Six months later
Miley
Sniff sniff, sniff sniff
Up and down
my mother’s belly

I wonder
What does she smell?

And yet

I know
    This time I know

I know what Miley smells
Growing inside of my mother’s belly
Yet again
Only six months
After

I know

I know
Because the doctor
Told us that
That which
Might have/could have
Might/could
Kill her

The cancer is back

I know
We know
Miley knows

Sniff sniff, sniff sniff
