The new year is already a month in and many students are making their mark on this campus. One of them is Freshman Brianne Barta. Brianne is on the Cross Country and Track team and is currently living in Bergstrom Hall. She is from Kewaunee, Wisconsin and her major is undecided so far.
Running has always been an important and influential part of her life as she has been running for seven years now. She started running in middle school and kept running through high school. Now, she is on the Women’s Cross Country team at St. Norbert and is very excited. When asked about the differences between running for high school and college, Brianne said that the size was noticeable, but the unity of the team is amazing.
“The team is bigger, but the team is still close and we all support each other,” said Brianne.
The team practices every day at 6 a.m. and is a huge commitment for her. On top of this, she is in the Honors Program and has a commitment to the classroom. In high school, Brianne took 6 APs and is used to the academic rigor of the Honors Program and all of her classes. With both of these demanding obligations, Brianne has to balance her time well in order to succeed.
“There is a lot of free time, a lot more time to study,” Brianne said, “I need to get away from people and eliminate distractions.” Brianne says that her favorite place to do this is in the Gehl-Mulva Science Center Third Floor where she can remove herself from others. When she works with others, she likes to go to the Bergstrom Hall kitchen.
One helpful tool that Brianne utilizes is Google Calendar. She says that whenever she is working hard on homework, she may lose track on time. Google Calendar gives her reminders of what she has up next, such as class or practice, and helps her to stay on time.
“Google Calendar is life, it reminds me of where I need to be,” said Brianne.
Brianne is excelling both academically and athletically, and is enjoying her time here at St. Norbert so far. She is looking forward to the rest of the year and seeing how cross country and track teams perform, and hanging out with all of her new friends.
