Honors Family: Sarah Jensen and Brianne Barta

March 19, 2018

With so many siblings in the Honors Program, it is exciting to discover that the Honor’s Family Tree extends its roots beyond siblings! This month, we get the privilege to meet cousins Sarah Jensen ('18) and Brianne Barta ('21). The cousins, both being adopted from China, may share different experiences here at SNC, but, they both share their love for the Honors Program and their honors family! With Sarah being a senior and knowing the ropes, she is always willing to lend her cousin a hand when she needs it! “It’s been fun having Brianne on campus and getting to show her around! I try to let her do her thing but am happy to help her in any way I can.” Brianne knows that she can always count on her cousin for advice; she says “It has been cool having my cousin around. I know if I have a question I can ask her and it's great getting to see her more often!”

With it being Brianne’s freshman year, she lives in Bergstrom Hall along with the rest of the honors class of 2021. Brianne lives on the first floor of Bergstrom with her roommate, Sydney, five rooms down from where Sarah had lived just three years prior! The cousins agree that they both have enjoyed their time in the Bergstrom Community! Brianne loves the vibe that Bergstrom has, as well as the lounges and kitchen. As Brianne stated, “There are almost always people in there and it definitely builds on the idea of Communio!” Sarah loved living Bergstrom and she goes to visit her old home often! “One of my best friends is Brianne’s RA,” Sarah said, “so I am in Bergstrom more than the average senior which gives me plenty of opportunities to visit her!”

Over the past 4 years at SNC, Sarah has kept incredibly busy! As a psychology and French double major with music minor, Sarah has been a research assistant and the Vice President of the Psychology department, a Psychology TA, and a Community Assistant for REH. However, her involvement doesn’t stop there! Sarah is also involved in Oxfam, flute choir and bell choir! Brianne’s first year has also kept her incredibly busy! With interests that span all disciplines, Brianne’s major is currently undecided, however being a math enthusiast, Brianne is involved in math club, but is also a part of REH and runs for SNC’s Cross Country and Track and Field teams! Running for the past seven years, Brianne has adjusted well to the intensity of the practices, waking up everyday at six a.m.. to train! “I love running here and being a part of the team”, Brianne said, “It's almost like having a second family. Everyone is so nice and I know I can go to them if I ever need anything, whether it is for help with homework or even someone to go to a basketball game with!”

When asked about their time at SNC, both Sarah and Brianne agree that their favorite part of it is the people! “I have met so many wonderful individuals in my four years that have become close friends and mentors,” Sarah concluded, “I will miss lunches, and life chats with these people next year!” In a few short months, Sarah will be graduating with her fellow classmates, so while Sarah bids SNC, au revoir, she wishes Brianne the best for the rest of her college experience! “The honors program has allowed me many opportunities and I can’t wait to see what opportunities it provides for Brianne during her next three years!”
