How to Apply for Honors Global Seminars

March 19, 2018

The beginning of spring semester signals that it is time for students to begin considering applying for one of next year’s Honors Global Seminars!

An Honors Global Seminar is a trip offered especially to a small group of honors students which lasts about two weeks over J-term. Students are introduced to and guided through the country being studied by a professor, who also leads short classes prior to and during the trip. Students who participate will receive four course credits toward a core requirement and an honors course requirement. Every year, the Honors Program offers a variety of planned trips; past examples include Spain, Greece, and the Philippines. Numerous honors students, staff, and faculty have had the time of their lives on these Honors Global Seminars. Let’s find out how you can, too!

Before you apply, here are some things you should research and take into account before making the personal decision to travel abroad:

  • Do your research. Look at the description of the trip in the Study Abroad Office’s listing, which includes dates of the trip, costs, types and amount of credits given, application deadlines, whether or not a visa is necessary, etc.

  • Determine how you will pay for the trip and explore payment plans.

  • Plan out your schedule in advance. Decide whether or not you have time for the trip and are able to leave the country for those two weeks of winter break.

Now, we will guide you through the application process for the Honors Global Seminar. First, you must find the listing of trips on the study abroad website. There, you can click to create an online account with the Study Abroad Office and begin your application for the trip you are interested in. Before you begin, be aware that there are a few steps required that may take some time to complete, as well as that you will need to have your passport handy. Below are the parts of the application you can expect to fill out:

  • Personal Information

  • Write two brief (150-200 word) essays about how studying abroad will align with your academic goals and relate to your interests

  • Picture of your passport

  • Submit a $500 deposit at the Bursar Office (note: it will take about a week for the payment to show up in your Study Abroad Office account)

  • Fill out a pre-trip survey assessing your attitudes as a traveler

  • Read and accept policies

  • Sign the agreement

After your deposit comes through and the application is filled out, you can log back in and click “Submit!” When the deadline for your particular application arrives, you can hope to expect a prompt email notification of your acceptance to the trip.

Now that you’ve been accepted to the Honors Global Seminar in the country of your dreams with all of your honors friends, here is what you will have to do to prepare for the trip:

  • Book flights

  • Register for the course

  • Be sure your passport will be valid until after the trip

  • Make payments

  • Attend the pre-trip meetings, which will explain must-knows like what to pack and what you will be studying in the course

The St. Norbert College Honors Program is proud to be able to offer Honors Global Seminars for its students and provide the opportunity to study abroad for those who may not be able to fit this experience into their rigorous academic schedules and demanding lives.
