As a newbie to De Pere, I took some time over the summer to get to know the area a little better before I came to live here as a student. I definitely didn’t think De Pere was a super interesting place, but I was quickly proven wrong. After my research, here are a few of my favorite spots, (most of which are walkable from St. Norbert) and some upcoming events you won’t want to miss!
Munchies & Cafes
Food in De Pere is pretty amazing, from Erberts and Gerberts to the Union Hotel & Restaurant there’s a lot of food selection. Nicolet Restaurant is well-known as having the biggest pancakes in De Pere and an overall amazing breakfast. That being said, Julie’s Cafe is up there too if you’re in the mood for a hearty breakfast. Of course, there’s also Luna Cafe, a De Pere staple among college students and community members alike that lives up to the hype. The Exchange is a new coffee shop, restaurant and boutique all in one located just across from Luna. Not only does it provide a cool atmosphere, but also a diverse menu from chocolate crepes to BLTs. If you’re more in the mood for some amazing pizza or other “grill” type food, Gallager’s Pizza is the way to go. A meer half block from campus, it’s super convenient and super tasty. My last food fave is a little different. Astha Grocery and Gifts brings fresh and traditional Indian food to the De Pere community. Besides the fact that the owners are super sweet, the food is crazy good and it’s so fun to try something new every once and awhile.
Sweets & Treats
If you know me, you know I have a really big sweet tooth. Luckily, De Pere is filled with places to buy sweet treats, you aren’t just confined to the ice cream in Phils or fro-yo in the caf. Seroogy’s Chocolates is of similar status to Luna in the
De Pere community. Super rich and high quality, they’re some of the best chocolate I’ve ever had and I highly recommend you try them if you haven’t; it may change your life. If you aren’t in the mood for straight up chocolate, The Cupcake Couture might be the dessert stop for you instead. At The Cupcake Couture, their cupcake menu changes monthly and they also have specialty items like cookie sandwiches, cake balls, shots of frosting, and pupcakes for that special pooch in your life. Now I know what you’re thinking… but what if I’m in the mood for ice cream? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Zesty’s Frozen Custard has a plethora of “scrambles” to choose from. Similar to Zesty’s, Sweet Frog is also a cool place to go for a treat. Sweet Frog serves frozen yogurt with more topping options than you could ever need.
I like to shop at home are normally Forever 21, Dry Goods, and Francesca's, but in De Pere there are a lot of cute boutiques in the downtown area for ladies clothes. If I’m looking to go shopping I go to Hey Daisy! or Poppy Avenue Boutique. Both those stores have fun girly gifts and everything from cute t-shirts to flowy dresses. Azure is another boutique option but it’s much pricier than the others since it more on the high-end side of clothing style.
Although I’m not a huge art person, I have been to Artless Bastard (a local art gallery) and I really enjoyed it. There, they really push the boundaries of what art is. Artless Bastard is for all art makers, lovers, and students alike in a very creative environment. If you’re looking to make art on your own, I suggest Paintin Pottery where you can not only paint pottery but you can also paint wine glasses, create mosaics, or try glass fusing. The creative options are endless!
I know it’s starting to get chilly outside but fear not! Fox River Tours doesn’t only offer stunning boat rides during the warm seasons, they do much more! This year they’re offering boat-less tours. On the third Monday of every month, November through April, they’re hosting a “Supper Club club” where they go to a different supper club each month followed by entertainment. Fox River Tours is also hosting a holiday lights event in December that goes to the
National Museum Festival of Trees and Green Bay Botanical Gardens Festival of Lights! If you’re looking for something budget friendly, the Fox River Trail is the way to go and it’s gorgeous any time of year. The 25 mile trail is great for seeing those last minute fall colors. There are tons of options for things to do on the trail, walking, biking, and skating to name a few. For some fast paced fun, in the winter snowmobiles are also allowed, but only on certain parts of the trail.
