On August 21st, first-year Honors students came flooding onto campus, moving into their new dorms and officially becoming "Bergies". After settling into their dorms and saying good-bye to their parents, the new students were creatively forced out of their rooms to meet one another and the new community in which they lived by participating in scavenger hunt. In years past, as a part of Welcome Week, all first-year SNC students would participate in a scavenger hunt around campus. This tradition has momentarily ended, but the Honors faculty brought it back for the Honors students with a twist: In addition to exploring certain Honors-essential campus locations, first-year students explore many of the small businesses around De Pere, many of which are run and owned by SNC alumni. Honors first-year students were divided into teams led by their torch leaders and given vague hints that led them through De Pere area. Students explored the sights, the sounds, and sometimes even the tastes of the community with stops at local favorites like Luna’s, Gyros & Kabobs, Seroogy’s, and Bona Fide Juicery.
Before the students went out and found these amazing locations, though, they were given an incentive. They were told that the group that finished first would get a prize. This motivated the students to run around De Pere, excitedly and competitively solving the clues. In the end, one group did win gift certificates to Ed’s, and all students had fun getting to know one another, trying to find answers based on hints, discovering the local haunts, and enjoying free food. And, to top it all off, at the end of the event...pizza!
