Run for Lungs 2019

November 25, 2019

The 2019 Run for Lungs (RFL) 5k provided participants and members of several organizations on campus with a day of presentations, a fundraiser, a run, all for a connection to the Lung Cancer community. Colleges Against Cancer —a club on campus that supports research for all types of cancer through fundraisers, runs, dinners and awareness events— was the creator and host of this event. Two of the Honors Program sophomores, Andrea’ Boyd and Alisa Lewis, assisted the Run/Walk as the Event Coordinators. These two have been a part of Colleges Against Cancer and Run For Lungs since they first came to SNC in 2018.

The Run/Walk was created as a fundraiser to find a cure for lung cancer; all proceeds are given to lung cancer research. This is the fourth annual run/walk on and around the St. Norbert Campus. The event was highly anticipated with over 75 participants and many volunteers. The event was designed to be an educational event for the various groups and individuals on campus to come and learn about lung cancer and spread overall awareness of all types of cancer. Posters were spread across the building explaining cancer, certain risks and treatment options. For the event this year, a cancer-affected widow came to speak about losing her husband at the age of 35 to an aggressive form of lung cancer. Her story was inspiring and left many in tears as she detailed the challenges of being a single mother affected by cancer. Before and after the run, participants could check out the informational posters and booths to learn about cancer or make cards for local cancer patients. In addition, various sales of past Run for Lungs cancer shirts and ribbons were offered to continue the fundraising efforts. Each participant was also awarded a free breakfast, generously donated by Dunkin Donuts, and a RFL

t-shirt.

Overall, the event was a huge success, and as event coordinator Andrea’ Boyd says, “Run For Lungs was an engaging experience celebrating the fighters, the survivors, and those who lost their battle.”
